What is the typical career of a CaSPA Principal prior to appointment?

As the table above indicates, there is no "typical" career path to becoming a CaSPA Principal.

At the same time there are some common trends e.g. being a Deputy Principal in a Catholic Secondary School [50% of all appointments come from this general classification]. However where the school is located has a significant bearing on where the successful applicant was working just prior to appointment.

There are very clear distinctions between the smaller jurisdictions who tend to look interstate Deputy Principals and Principals from Catholic Secondary Schools for their new principals:

  • ACT - 41%
  • NT - 34%
  • Tasmania - 28%
  • National Average - 12.5%

By contrast the larger jurisdictions tend to look within their own borders for their stock of Principals.

Another area where there are relativey few appointments is from the ranks of Catholic Primary Principals.  Again this tends to happen in the smaller jurisdictions and often to schools that have both primary and secondary students:

  • NT - 17%
  • Tasmania - 14%
  • National Average - 3.5%

The other interesting trend is to look at the jurisdictions who tend to source their Principals from within the ranks of the Catholic Education Office. It is interesting to see that this occurs where there are the most centralised Catholic Education Offices:

  • ACT - 13%
  • NSW - 11%
  • National Average - 6.4%

It would be interesting to explore why these more centralised Jurisdictions appoint a significantly higher proportion of principals from within the ranks of CEO staff than anywhere else in Australia.
