How Administration on the Move can improve your effectiveness as a Principal
It is never easy for principals to find the time to drop into the staff room, visit classrooms or randomly roam the school yard. For many the only way to do this is to timetable it into their weekly routine.

What are the pro's for doing this?

Visibility, relationships, embedding vision, articulating direction, health check, pulse check, identify issues, build efficacy, enhance trust, reinforce collaboration, instructional leadership, value professional dialogue, provide feedback, receive feedback.

What are the con's?

It adds 2 hours onto your week perhaps.

When you do move about the school, do it with purpose. Have questions to ask
  • students to see if they are learning and if the schools initiatives are having impact.
  • teachers to see if they have understood and are on track with the schools directions
  • parents to see if they have any concerns and are advocates for the school

Of course do the human side of it who will win the footy, did anyone go to Justin Bieber, whose birthday is it? There is no denying how important this side of leadership is. However, don't miss the opportunity to know what is happening in your own school that impacts on student learning and the school's reputation.

The problem with being stuck in the office is you become a better manager. When you take the time to circulate and talk to staff, students and parents you become a better leader. Yes! there are many demands on your time from many directions, but at the end of the day it is your choice.
