Our Cairns Conference lived up to its promise to be Tropical and Topical with the keynote presentation by the Honourable Kristina Keneally [pictured above].
It would be fair to say that nothing in this presentation was "news" to any of the delegate, as in reality, the presentation picked up many of the themes that appear daily in the media and also in commentary on the place of religion [and especially the Catholic Church] in our society. The perspective Kristina provided was that of one who is seeking reform in the Church so that it can better serve its members and also contribute to society more generally. She asked of herself - and of the delegates - the key question: whether it is best to seek these changes "within the tent", or to make a break with the church and so seek reform as an "outsider".
Responses to this presentation ranged from strong support to levels of discomfort and disagreement - exactly as the organisers had hoped.
