Head of Federal Education Department meets with CaSPA Board

One of the benefits of meeting in Canberra is our ability to access key people within the Department of Education and Training.

We were very fortunate to connect with Dr Michelle Bruniges [above] - Secretary of the Department of Education and Training on March 6th as part of our Board Meeting. For over an hour we were able to canvas a broad range of issues facing Catholic Secondary Principals.

Some of the issues raised with Dr Bruniges were:

  • the work of the NSRB and the need for a fair and transparent measure of need to determine funding to schols
  • teacher workforce planning and the need for sourcing accurate employment data for the teaching profession
  • attracting teachers to rural and remote areas along with the recruitment of staff where shortages occur such as STEM education
  • the need for National Teacher Registration

The Board made the point that there was strong support from Catholic Secondary Principals across the country that our policy makers support a move to a far more streamlined and consistent approach to education policy, funding and initiatives, and that for this to occur there was a need for a change in the "Architecture of Education Decision Making" along with the need for the voice of principals to be present in these discussions and debates.
