ACT Principals join CaSPA Directors at March Board Meeting

A higlight of recent CaSPA Board meetings is the opportunity to meet with Catholic Principals in the jurisdiction where the meetings take place. It was most encouraging therefore to see a good percentage of Canberra Goulburn Diocese Principals join the Directors for a meeting and meal on the evening of March 5th.  The format of the meeting was similar to like meetings in other parts of the country:

  • Introductions
  • An overview of CaSPA Operations
  • Dialogue with local principals on the issues of importance to them.

For the Canberra Goulburn Principals, key areas of concern included;

  • the significant impact on their schools contained in the Gonski 2.0 funding model
    • Canberra schools stand to be the most adversely affected in the country by the proposed drop in funding
    • already a number of Canberra schools are experiencing a drop in enrolments as families considered the increased impact on their budgets by the projected feed increases
  • the loss of students at the end of year 10 to the large government run Year 11&12 Colleges that are located across Canberra
  • difficulties finding qualified staff in the areas beyond Canberra
    • this is exacerbated by the restrictions put on teachers who have overseas qualifications and experience
