Outline of Speech: I
will structure my address on a homily of Bishop James Cuskelly, given
in Brisbane in 1984, in which he raises three basic questions: “What
kind of person ought a saint be for us? What sort of person will serve
as a realistic model to Australians? What are the qualities and attitudes
that make for greatness in the Australian character – where are
the wellsprings from which living water will flow; what are the roots
from which strong life can grow?” In amplifying and applying
my response to these questions, I will use the examples of Mary MacKillop
and others whose spirituality demonstrates the power of the Spirit
in our land
